Kawasaki Ki-61 Hein

Hasegawa's 1/48 scale Ki-61 Hein is available online from Squadron.com

Description

Hasegawa released its 1/48 scale kit no.09613 which represents Kawasaki Ki61 Koh/Otsu Hien (Tony) in the year 2005.

The kit is not bad but Hasegawa has done better. The main problems were fitting of the engine cowl (B8) with fuselage and putting wings and fuselage together.

Eduard’s photoetched set (FE160 Zoom set is sufficient) and vacuformed canopy (e.g. from S-kit) will improve the kit considerably.

My model was airbrushed using Mr. Color Super Silver C159 and then polished by Tamiya polishing compound Fine and Finish.

I chose a plane of the 37th Rensei Hikótai based on Formosa Heito airfield in 1944 from three offered markings. It is good to consult FAOW no.17 publication (pages 26, 27) to specify the marking.
