Description

Here is another painting from the Aussie Spitfire Project that I have been working on, “Rhapsody in Red” 24” x 36” oil on canvas.

This painting features F/O Lysle Roberts flying “Rhapsody in Red” his personally assigned Spitfire MkVIII ZP-R, A58-458 over Darwin’s Mindil Beach in mid 1944.

Initially Lysle flew Mk Vb Spitfires with 457 Squadron before converting to the MkVIII.

In addition to Spitfires Lysle also flew P-40 Kittyhawks and P-51 Mustangs with the RAAF during WWII. I have also included a period photo of Lysle in the cockpit and a detail of the Pin-Up nose art.
